FC Shakhtar Donetsk won the Ukrainian Premier League for the 5th time in the club's history. Following the 2009 UEFA Cup victory, Shakthar got to play in the UEFA Super Cup, the first time a Ukrainian club had done so following the fall of the Soviet Union. That game ended in a 1-0 victory for Champions League winners Barcelona, with Pedro scoring five minutes ahead of a possible penalty shootout. Following the match, Barcelona had a €25 million offer accepted for Dmytro Chygrynskiy, the highest ever fee received by the club. The dream to challenge for Champions League honours had to be suspended following an away goals defeat in Shakhtar's inaugural qualifying round to Timişoara. That gave Shakhtar a chance to defend their UEFA Cup title in the renamed Europa League, but they went out to Fulham in the Round of 32.
